In today’s churches, schools, auditoriums, corporate facilities, and performance venues, clear and reliable audio is essential. Wireless microphones allow pastors, worship leaders, educators, presenters, and performers to move freely while ensuring their message reaches the audience.
However, an older wireless microphone system may operate on frequencies that are no longer permitted in the United States. Even a system that remains compliant can experience interference, signal dropouts, or reduced range in today’s increasingly crowded wireless environment.
The good news is that not every older wireless microphone needs to be replaced. The first step is understanding what equipment you have, where it operates, and whether it still meets your organization’s needs.
Which Wireless Microphone Frequencies Are Illegal in the U.S.?
Over the past several years, the Federal Communications Commission has reallocated portions of the UHF television spectrum for commercial wireless services.
Two of the most significant changes affecting wireless microphones involve the 700 MHz and 600 MHz bands:
Wireless microphone operation in the 700 MHz band, 698–806 MHz, is prohibited in the United States.
Wireless microphone operation in most of the 600 MHz service band, specifically 617–652 MHz and 663–698 MHz, is also prohibited.
Limited wireless microphone use may still be permitted in certain narrow portions of the 600 MHz guard band and duplex gap, subject to FCC rules and operating restrictions. Because the rules are more nuanced than a simple list of “legal” and “illegal” frequencies, organizations should verify the exact frequency range of each system before continuing to use it.
Operating equipment in a prohibited frequency range may cause interference with licensed wireless services and could violate federal regulations.

How Do I Know if My Wireless Microphone Is Still Legal?
Ask yourself the following questions:
Were your wireless microphones purchased before 2017?
Do you know the exact frequency range in which they operate?
Have you experienced interference, static, signal dropouts, or reduced range?
Have you added more wireless microphones or other wireless equipment to your facility?
Are replacement transmitters, batteries, antennas, or other components becoming difficult to find?
If you answered yes or I’m not sure, it is time to evaluate your system.
An older system is not automatically illegal. Some systems purchased many years ago continue to operate within permitted frequency ranges. Conversely, a system can still turn on and appear to work normally even though its frequency is no longer authorized for wireless microphone use in the United States.
How to Find Your Wireless Microphone's Frequency Range
Begin by locating the frequency range or frequency-band designation on your equipment. This information is often printed on:
The back or bottom of the receiver
The handheld transmitter
The bodypack transmitter
A label inside the battery compartment
The original packaging or product documentation
Be sure to check every component. A receiver, handheld transmitter, and bodypack must operate within compatible frequency ranges.
A model name alone may not be enough. Manufacturers often produce the same model in several different frequency-band versions.
Why Do Wireless Microphones Experience Interference?
FCC compliance is not the only reason to evaluate an older wireless system.

Modern facilities may contain numerous wireless technologies, including:
Wireless microphones
In-ear monitor systems
Wi-Fi networks
Bluetooth devices
Wireless intercom systems
Assistive-listening systems
Wireless presentation technology
Wireless DMX lighting controls
Wireless microphones also share spectrum with other users. There is no single frequency range reserved exclusively for wireless microphones, which makes proper system selection and coordination increasingly important.
A microphone can therefore operate legally and still perform poorly if its frequency conflicts with nearby television stations, other microphones, or wireless equipment within the building.
What Is Wireless Microphone Frequency Coordination?
Purchasing a new microphone does not automatically eliminate interference.
When several wireless devices are used in the same facility, their frequencies must be selected so they do not interfere with one another. Systems purchased separately or added gradually over time may create compatibility problems that were not present when the original equipment was installed.
Frequency coordination considers factors such as:
The facility’s location
Local television-channel activity
The number of wireless channels required
The brands and models being used
Other RF equipment operating nearby
Future expansion plans
Manufacturer frequency-finding tools can provide helpful starting information, but results may change as channel assignments, regulations, and local RF conditions evolve. When multiple systems or frequency bands are involved, a coordinated system design is especially important.
What Frequencies Can Wireless Microphones Legally Use in the U.S.
There is no single “best” frequency band for every organization.
Depending on the equipment, application, licensing status, and applicable FCC rules, wireless microphones may operate in portions of:
The VHF television bands
The UHF television bands below 608 MHz
The 600 MHz guard band or duplex gap under specific restrictions
902–928 MHz
1.9 GHz
2.4 GHz
Certain portions of the 5 GHz spectrum
Additional spectrum available to eligible licensed users
Most users operate wireless microphones on an unlicensed basis, although licensed operation may be available to qualifying organizations and productions.
The right choice depends on the number of microphones needed, the size and construction of the facility, local RF activity, and the other wireless technology being used nearby.

Myth vs. Fact
Myth: Every older wireless microphone must be replaced.
Fact: Many older systems remain legal and usable if they operate within an authorized frequency range and continue to meet the organization’s needs.
Myth: If the microphone turns on, it is legal.
Fact: Equipment may still function while operating on a frequency that is no longer authorized in the United States.
Myth: A 2.4 GHz system cannot experience interference.
Fact: Systems operating at 2.4 GHz may share spectrum with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other devices.
Myth: Buying new equipment automatically resolves wireless problems.
Fact: Proper equipment selection, antenna placement, RF coordination, and system configuration are equally important.
When Should an Older Wireless Microphone System Be Replaced?
An older system may be compliant but still be approaching the end of its practical service life.
Organizations should consider whether:
The manufacturer still supports the product
Replacement transmitters and receivers remain available
Batteries and charging accessories can still be sourced
Damaged antennas or other components can be replaced
The equipment can accommodate future expansion
Repairing the system remains cost-effective
A system that works today may still present operational risk if one failed component cannot be repaired or replaced before an important service, presentation, or performance.
What Modern Wireless Systems Offer
Newer professional wireless systems may provide:
Automatic frequency scanning
Improved RF coordination
More efficient use of available spectrum
Better resistance to interference
Network-based monitoring and control
Improved battery management
Greater system scalability
More consistent audio performance
The value of an upgrade is not limited to compliance. Improved reliability can reduce troubleshooting, simplify operation, and give staff greater confidence during important events.
Can Illegal U.S. Wireless Microphones Be Sold or Used Internationally?
Possibly—but this requires careful research and patience.
Frequency allocations differ from one country to another. A wireless microphone system that cannot legally operate in the United States may operate within an authorized range in another country. Manufacturers offer different frequency versions for different countries and regions, demonstrating that a band unsuitable for the United States may have applications elsewhere.
However, this does not mean that an outdated system can automatically or legally be sold anywhere in Europe or another international market. Regulations vary by country, and buyers may also need to consider:
The exact operating-frequency range
Local licensing requirements
Permitted transmission-power levels
Equipment certification and labeling requirements
Import restrictions
Voltage and power-supply compatibility
Availability of compatible replacement components
Before listing equipment internationally, identify the exact frequency band and research the regulations in the buyer’s country. The buyer should also confirm that the equipment is legal for the intended use and location.
Finding a buyer for a specific frequency band may take time. However, international resale could allow some organizations to recover part of their investment rather than immediately discarding equipment that still has legitimate use elsewhere.
Organizations should never market prohibited equipment for continued operation in the United States. When resale is impractical, responsible electronics recycling, manufacturer programs, or approved trade-in opportunities may be better options.

Document the manufacturer, model number, and operating frequency of every receiver and transmitter.
2. Verify Compliance
Confirm that each system operates within a frequency range permitted for its intended use in the United States.
3. Evaluate Performance
Note any recurring dropouts, static, reduced range, damaged components, or compatibility concerns.
4. Review All Wireless Equipment Together
Include microphones, in-ear monitors, intercoms, assistive-listening devices, and other RF technology in the evaluation.
5. Consider Long-Term Support
Determine whether parts, repairs, batteries, and compatible replacement units will remain available.
6. Plan Before Expanding
Do not add wireless channels without confirming that they can operate reliably alongside your existing equipment.
